July is sphagnum moss appreciation month

Drop into the Visitor Centre during July to see the temporary sphagnum moss display. Items of interest include a BT Young Scientists display award project by students from Moate Community College. They investigated the effects of drainage on the growth of sphagnum moss. A reference collection of sphagnum will be available view using microscopes and colouring sheets and crafts will be available for young children.

 

 

Curlew Watching July 6th to 8th

This is a unique opportunity to hear and see the behaviour of the rare Curlew on a raised bog before they move quietly into grassland in the coming weeks. Once a common sight in Ireland they are now a rare sight to behold. NPWS staff will be available each morning this week from 09:15 to 09:45 with a spotting scope and binoculars to allow you experience a snippet of the world of the precious curlew. Meet at the bench on the boardwalk.

 

 

International Bog Day 28th July

This is a family event jointly run by the National Parks and Wildlife Service and the Laois/Offaly Irish Wildlife Trust. Enjoy a few fun filled hours outdoors exploring the wildlife of a raised bog. Peat dam building demonstration (Heritage Week 23rd August)

After the protection of Clara bog in the late 1980's the conservation work began. This involved the installation of over 4000 drain dams across the bog to prevent it from drying out and being lost forever. This work took several years to complete and was often done by hand! Meet one of the original dam builders who is now the conservation ranger for the area. This is a unique opportunity to get a comprehensive modern history of the reserve with one who knows it best today.
